What Is An Air Door?

Air doors, also known as air curtains, are an effective way to cut your commercial heating and air conditioning costs. In addition to the energy savings, air doors have many other advantages. The more you know about air doors, the better able you'll be to decide whether or not an air door is right for your business.

What is an air door?

An air door is a device that seals air in a location without requiring the use of a physical barrier. Air doors use a stream of air to keep climate-controlled air inside and non-climate controlled air outside.

How do air doors work?

Air doors bring air in through the intake. The air is accelerated by a fan on the inside of the air door, and then it's pushed back out through the nozzle. The air that exits the air door nozzle is distributed evenly across the doorway in an angled stream pointed at the ground. When the air hits the ground, it scatters, with the majority of the air flowing to a point on the air intake side of the door.

What are the benefits of air doors?

The primary goal of an air door is to prevent the escape of climate-controlled air from the inside of a business, and air doors do this quite well. Essentially, air doors help businesses save money and energy. In addition, air doors can have many benefits that go beyond this primary function. Some businesses find air doors to be so effective that they leave their physical doors open during business hours and rely on the air doors. Air doors are able to:

  • Allow customers to enter and exit without opening or closing a physical barrier.
  • Allow customers to see into a business without a door getting in the way.
  • Prevent the entry of many flying insects into the business.
  • Prevent opening and closing doors from getting in the way of activities on the sidewalk.

How do you maintain an air door?

Air doors benefit from regular cleanings. To clean your air door, cut the power and remove the air intake grille or access panel. Vacuum the blower and motor, removing visible debris and dirt. Your air door's owners manual will have more instructions specific to your air door's model.
